Some tense but mystifying moments for a Thamesville family after pulling a live grenade from the Thames River.
Brianna Clarke and her family were “magnet fishing” near the new Thamesville bridge over the weekend when her husband snagged something heavy.
“Once he pulled it up, he had a look at it and was like “It’s a grenade,” … we had a good look and it was definitely a grenade with the pin still in it, it was kind of a scary moment.”
Clarke called 9-1-1 and was told to sent the grenade down gently and move themselves to safety. She says police showed up a short time later to take some pictures.
Chatham-Kent Police say the explosive has been identified as an M36 “fragment” grenade and has been sent to CFB Borden for disposal.
Clarke says their magnet is still attached and they should find out in a few days if they’ll be able to get it back.
She says the discovery is a little concerning, given all the construction that’s gone on with the bridge over the last year or so.
