The public school board is mulling over the possibility of staggering a return to school for some students.

On Tuesday, the province said boards can delay students’ return to the classroom if it helps with health and safety preparedness.

Lambton Kent District School Board director of education John Howitt says they’ve already delayed the return for junior kindergarten students, but could make some other changes.

“Given this announcement, we are taking a look at and considering whether we reduce numbers coming, just to test our processes and procedures, almost like a couple days of orientation to assist our students in knowing what’s expected of them and to make sure our processes are in place before full attendance.”

Howitt knows parents have concerns, and the board is taking feedback into account.

“It’s generally been positive with some requests for greater detail, especially what the ‘learn at home’ model may look like and what dismissal procedures may look like,” Howitt says. “We’re updating the document as it goes to make sure parents’ questions are answered.”

Howitt says all of the board’s plans are works in progress at this point as the COVID situation evolves, but they’ll pass on any new information to parents as soon as any changes are made.
