Drone Operator Arrested

A Wallaceburg man has been arrested in connection with a YouTube video of the scene of fatal crash.

The video surfaced following a fatal collision on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg back on April 3rd. Authorities say the drone footage included the locked-down scene of the crash, the ambulance on its way to hospital, and the patient being brought inside the hospital in Wallaceburg.

Authorities say the drone was also in the air, a short distance from the helicopter landing site at the hospital as the Ornge air ambulance arrived.

In partnership with Transport Canada, Chatham-Kent Police were able to identify the drone operator and a 33-year-old man has now been charged with operating a remotely piloted aircraft system without it being registered and issued a $250 fine.

“Drone operators should be aware that there are a number of rules and regulations that dictate how and where the drones can be flown,” says CKPS Drone Operator, Constable Josh Flickweert. “It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with these before you fly your drone.  Non-compliance will be investigated and you may be issued a fine or lose your license to fly.”
