Supply and Demand Could Affect Online French Courses

With back to school just over a week away, some high school parents are worried about their kids’ options when it comes to online learning.

Mary Mancini is the public board’s superintendent of education for secondary schools, and says courses, including French Immersion, are based on demand.

“We take a look at the course requests for all the students, and from that we’re trying to determine what courses we can offer,” Mancini says. “You can appreciate that French Immersion across our district isn’t a big proportion of all of our offerings.”

Mancini says the latest numbers suggested there should be enough students for the core French Immersion course.

Meantime at the St Clair Catholic District School Board, Director of Education Deb Crawford says the main issue is staffing levels.

“Like every other board across the province, hiring qualified French Immersion teachers has always been a challenge,” Crawford says. “We intend to continue to provide French Immersion at the elementary and secondary levels at our board this September and are putting our final planning pieces into place during the upcoming week.”
