Charing Cross Road and Blenheim “Road Diet” Plans Not A “Done Deal”

There has been some local debate in regards to potential changes to Charing Cross Road/Queen Street in Chatham as well as Chatham Street in Blenheim, prompting a response from the municipality.
Chatham-Kent Engineering says the proposed ‘Road Diet’ projects for both stretches are projects for Council’s consideration and are not yet a “done deal”.
Director of Engineering Chris Thibert says the matter was brought to their attention after some conflicting messages from local media.
“These projects require Council’s approval before proceeding and all of the public’s comments and feedback will be brought forward at the October 19, 2020 Council meeting for Council’s consideration,” he adds.
The Engineering and Transportation Division is looking into the “Road Diet” to narrow or eliminate a lane of traffic.
The proposed project would see the installation of two north and south through lanes as well as a designated centre turning lane with bike lanes on each side of the road.
