The Canadian federal government is banning some specific single-use plastics, effective next year.
2021 will bring the end to plastic grocery bags, plastic straws and cutlery and more.
The full list of nationally banned plastics includes grocery checkout bags, straws, stir sticks, six-pack rings, plastic cutlery and food takeout containers made from hard-to-recycle plastics (like black plastic packaging).
Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says the government opted to include the plastics that are harmful to the environment and difficult to recycle. They also considered options for readily available alternatives.
Regulations to introduce the ban will be finalized by the end of 2021.
