There was a special flag raising ceremony Friday morning at the Civic Centre and other municipal service centres across Chatham-Kent.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion branches across zone A-3 were on hand to mark Veterans week across Canada.

The week officially begins November 5th but the poppy campaign is already under way.

Mayor Darrin Canniff says with this year marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the work of the Legion remains extremely important.

There are 10 legion branches across the municipality.

Legion Zone Poppy Chairman Irene Williams said she would like to see everyone in Chatham-Kent recognize the sacrifices of veterans.

The proceeds from the poppy campaign go towards programs that directly assist veterans and their families.
