Chatham-Kent has given its approval for an encroachment on Dufferin Ave, just east of the Walpole Island First Nation Bridge to allow for the construction of a permanent checkpoint.
A concrete base and moveable structure will be built at the intersection of Dufferin Avenue and Bluewater Line to be used by Walpole Island officials.
The First Nation community set up a temporary checkpoint earlier this year to prevent non-residents and non-essential personal from entering into the community due to Covid-19 concerns.
According to a report to council, the encroachment would extend over the shoulder of Dufferin Avenue approximately 10 feet by 10 feet for a foundation of a small structure to protect employees from the elements. The structure will be only present during times traffic is being controlled into Walpole Island First Nation.
