St Clair River Ice Breaking Up

Water is flowing down the St Clair River once again.

With milder temperatures this week and strong winds, the ice along the river has started breaking up.

However, the St Clair Region Conservation Authority warns that there is still a lot of ice, especially in the lower reaches of the system, and more flooding and erosion is possible, and the risk of more ice jams near the St Clair flats.

Minor ice jams and flooding are also possible along the Sydenham River with the ice cover and snow along the banks melting. Soil may become saturated and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.

Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous ice conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
