A local group is looking to engage Chatham-Kent’s arts community with a new project.
The Chatham-Kent Art House is a multi-disciplinary event combining visual art and creative writing.
The idea initially came from exhibit by Wallaceburg-based surrealist painter Troy Brooks in Los Angeles last summer. Dan White with the Wallaceburg and District Council for the Arts says he felt every painting captured one second of a story.
The first phase, which is now underway, is a call for visual art submissions.
There are no specific guidelines for the works of art, they can be photographs, paintings, or sketches. Submissions will be reviewed by a five-person jury, including White, Brooks, Danielle Coleman, Lynda Moffat, and Jim Capes.
“We’ll take a week after March 28th, we’ll select three pieces from all the submissions, and then the beginning week of April we’ll open it up to writers inspired by the three pieces of visual art,” White says.
The written submissions must be between 500-1500 words, and a 50-word outline of their creative process.
“We will select six written submissions, two for each (visual) work. Danielle is going to take the lead on creating a zine, a little magazine, from the three works of art and the written submissions, we may include a few other honourable mentions.”
The magazine will then be available for purchase, and each winner will receive $75 from sponsor TekSavvy.
