Celebrating Original Peoples Day in CK

A special celebration is being held to honour National Indigenous People’s Day.

Scott Tate is a Metis citizen and member of the CK Indigenous Social Planning and Action Table and says Monday’s online event, Celebrating Original Peoples Day in CK, will include pre-recorded and live segments.

“There will be a variety of people doing grass dancing, some jingle dancing, some Indigenous music, some teachings, local speakers from agencies and companies that wanted to speak to Indigenous people.”

The event runs from noon until 5pm on Zoom, allowing viewers to pop in and out throughout the afternoon.

Tate says it’s a chance to focus on the positive.

“Over the last few weeks because of what’s been discovered in Kamloops and subsequent residential school sites, we started saying we need to celebrate this year. We really need to focus on the positive, the things that our cultures bring to Canada and to celebrate that focus.”

There is also a contest for young artists up to the age of 28 to submit a piece to help promote National Indigenous People’s Day.  The deadline is Friday, and the winner will receive an honourarium of $500.
