Charges have been laid following a violent domestic incident in Chatham.

Authorities say a man went to his ex-girlfriend’s house last night and knocked on the door. When the woman refused to allow him in, police say the accused broke down the door, cornered the victim in her bedroom, and assaulted her.

The suspect then grabbed the woman’s dog and took off.

Officers tracked down the man at a local motel. The 24-year-old is facing a slew of charges, including break and enter, assault, and forcible confinement.

The stolen dog was taken back home.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
