In an effort to limit the spread of the Omicron variant, the provincial government is expanding the eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots.
Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, announced several new COVID-19 health measures Friday afternoon, which included making the booster shot available to Ontarians 18 years of age and older starting January 4, 2022. Those eligible will be able to book appointments six months after receiving a second dose of the initial vaccine.
“As we continue to learn more about the Omicron variant, we are taking additional measures to protect our progress as we head into the winter months,” said Elliott in a news release. “Getting vaccinated and adhering to public health and workplace safety measures will continue to protect us and our loved ones against COVID and variants, but we won’t hesitate to continue to take swift action to ensure the continued health and safety of all Ontarians.”
Also beginning January 4, Ontarians will be required to use an enhanced vaccine certificate with a QR code and the Verify Ontario app wherever proof of vaccination is required. The QR code can be used digitally or by printing a paper copy, and be downloaded by clicking here.
A doctor’s note will no longer be accepted for those with a medical exemption from getting the vaccine as of January 10, 2022. Instead, a certificate with a QR code will be required.
The provincial government is also urging Ontario residents to limit social gatherings over the holidays. Employers in all industries are also being asked to make every effort to allow employees to work from home.
As well, beginning on December 20, youth between the ages of 12 to 17 will require proof of vaccination to participate in organized sports at recreational facilities.
The province said these new health measures will help reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 during the winter months and help to ensure Ontario’s hospital capacity is not overwhelmed.
As previously announced, anyone 50 years old and over will become eligible to schedule an appointment for their booster shot beginning Monday. The province said this will expand eligibility to around 5.5 million people.
