In an effort to give students a better understanding of Indigenous issues, a local school board is introducing a new Grade 11 English course for the 2022-2023 school year.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board says the course, Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices, will explore a variety of literary, informational, graphic, oral and media text forms emerging from Indigenous cultures in Canada.

“Students will engage in experiential learning and have opportunities to learn directly from Indigenous partners,” said Cortnee Goure, the school board’s Indigenous education lead. “Students will also explore their own ideas and understanding of Indigenous issues, with a focus on the development of the literacy, communication, critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success.”

The school board added that through these first-hand experiences and learning opportunities, students will also gain a greater cultural competency.

This prerequisite course will replace the previous compulsory Grade 11 English course and will prepare students for the Grade 12 English course.
