With the bulk of the first winter storm of 2022 now behind us, the Chatham-Kent Police Service is reminding drivers that winter weather can be unpredictable.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said most winter collisions happen because drivers are going too fast when the road conditions are unfavourable. Authorities said driving slowly will help ensure motorists remain in control of their vehicles.
Drivers should also steer gently and give other vehicles space on the road. It takes longer to stop on slippery roads, police said.
As well, police said drivers should not use cruise control on wet, snowy, or icy pavement, as it reduces reaction time and vehicle control.
A winter storm warning and snowfall warning were both issued for the municipality over the last few days, but have since ended. Another 5cm of snow is forecast to fall on Thursday, however blowing snow could be an issue in outlying areas with winds gusting to 40 km/hr at times.
