Icy Forecast Forces School Buses Off the Roads

It’s a snow day for students across Chatham-Kent – or perhaps more accurately an ice day.

With the risk of freezing rain as temperatures drop throughout the day, student transportation officials serving the Lambton-Kent District School Board, St Clair Catholic District School Board, and Conseil scolaire catholique Providence have taken the preemptive step of cancelling buses in all zones today.

A winter storm warning is in effect as a low-pressure system moves northeast across Lake Erie and Lake Ontario today.

Environment Canada is calling for freezing rain and ice pellets this morning and into the afternoon, changing to snow into the evening with between 10-15 centimeters expected.

Officials with the national weather agency say since the track of the low pressure system remains uncertain, precipitation type, timing and amounts could change.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break.
