State Of Emergency Ended, Emergencies Act Revoked

The Prime Minister of Canada and Premier of Ontario have ended the use of emergency measures in both the country and the province.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government had revoked the Emergencies Act. The act was invoked just over a week ago in an effort to quell the weeks-long occupation of downtown Ottawa by so-called “Freedom Convoy” protestors.

Also on Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford said he would be ending Ontario’s state of emergency, which had been in effect since February 11.

Both the state of emergency and the Emergencies Act gave police broader authority to help end the blockades in Ottawa, which had also spread to key Canada-U.S. border crossings, including the Ambassador Bridge.
