Chatham-Kent’s mayor is sending thoughts to the people of Ukraine as Russia continues its deadly assault on the country.
Mayor Darrin Canniff says his heart aches for what’s happening overseas and would like to see the Ukrainian flag raised at the Civic Centre in respect.
“Certainly we’ll be planning on reaching out to the local Ukrainian community and see if there’s anything we can do from the municipal side of things.”
A delegation of mayors from Ukraine paid a visit to Chatham-Kent in July, 2019 to speak with local officials about shared experiences on municipal amalgamation, government operations, and economic issues.
“They visited us here for a few days…so we’ll be reaching out to them as well,” Canniff says.
Airstrikes continued on cities and military base near the Ukrainian capital Friday morning.
World leaders have widely condemned the attacks, many imposing stricter sanctions on Russia.
