A local craft brewery is helping to celebrate indigenous culture.
Sons of Kent Brewing has launched its latest beer, Native Land, a project in partnership with East Woodland Brew Co to acknowledge the contributions and history of First Nations people in Canada.
“At Sons of Kent, we try to partner with ideas and concepts and projects that we believe in that can represent the people of Chatham-Kent,” Sons of Kent brewer Colin Chrysler says. “We are a brewery, but we also have the ability to be a place in the community that has the ability to change the narrative and be a positive place.”
The recipe for the beer was created by Bow and Arrow Brewing Company in New Mexico to recognize ancestral lands on which breweries around the globe are built. Each participating brewery then personalizes the blend with its own style and twist.
Matthew Nahdee of Walpole Island First Nation says they wanted to support causes that were highly visible and far-reaching in terms of reconciliation.
The chosen beneficiaries include the Ska:Na Family Learning Centre, an Indigenous led daycare; Walpole Island land Trust with a focus on maintaining and preserving the ecosystems of the territory; and the Pow Wow Pitch, which helps to support Indigenous entrepreneurs.
One dollar from the sale of each can or pint will support the three recipients.
The Native Land beer is available at the brewery on Adelaide Street in Chatham and online at sonsofkent.com while supplies last.
