School Board Discontinues Student Camping Trip, Fundraiser

Due to uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the local catholic school board has put an end to an annual student camping trip and fundraiser.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board has discontinued the Christmas in Muskoka fundraiser and the yearly Grade 7 leadership camps at Muskoka Woods in Rosseau, Ontario. The event has been cancelled for the last two years due to the pandemic.

“We have taken this difficult decision for a variety of reasons,” said Director of Education Scott Johnson in a news release. “Chief among them is the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic. Although the number of cases continues to decline, there is no way to predict what lies ahead. Overnight camps require close cohabitation, which may or may not be permitted one year from now.”

A new one-day leadership camp will be offered to Grade 7 and 8 students at a yet-to-be-named venue in southwestern Ontario.

The board said the new day-camp will allow schools to easily address health and safety considerations, should they arise.

All funds that were raised during the last Christmas in Muskoka event held in 2019 will support the new day-camp experience.
