A local couple is being honoured for their work in helping to restore natural habitat.
Gerald and Glenda Young have been recognized by the Sydenham Field Naturalists as the 2021 Friend of Nature Award winners with a pandemic-delayed ceremony.
In May, 2017 the Youngs began excavating two ponds to create three acres of new wetland, part of an overall 14-acres land retirement project.
Native grasses were planted as ground cover along with trees that are native to the area. Several acres of the grasses were over-seeded with flowering forbs to establish a tall grass prairie on the east side of the field next to the re-forested section.
Members of the Sydenham Field Naturalists were able to present the Youngs with their award recently and tour the area, which is evolving into a valuable habitat.
