A celebration of Indigenous culture in Chatham-Kent.
Tuesday, June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day. To mark the occasion, a special celebration is being held at the Ska:na Family Learning Centre, 25 Eighth Street in Chatham.
The event runs from 10am-2pm with drumming and dance demonstrations, arts and crafts vendors, information booths, and food vendors.
Today’s event is sponsored by the 7 Generations Indigenous Cultural Friendship Centre (7GICFC,) St Clair Catholic District School Board, Ska:na Famliy Learning Centre, Women’s Equity Business, and TJ Stables.
June 21st was first declared National Aboriginal Day in 1996 as a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
In 2017, the day was renamed National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near June 21st because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
