While one person and two dogs were able to make it out of a burning home near Erieau, two other pets weren’t so lucky.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services said multiple stations responded to the fire at 18878 Erieau Rd. on Monday shortly before 3 p.m. to find flames emanating from the lower windows and doors of the two-storey home. High winds pushed the fire into the attic and ultimately through the roof.
An excavator was later brought in to help extinguish the blaze and tear down the remains of the partially collapsed structure.
One person, who was home when the fire started, was able to escape the house uninjured with two dogs. Unfortunately, another dog and a pet rabbit were still in the home and perished in the blaze.
Damage caused by the fire is estimated at around $200,000.
The cause remains undetermined.
