The MP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington is calling on the federal government to provide proactive support to address abandoned gas wells in the region.

MP Dave Epp said greater cooperation between the federal and provincial governments is needed to prevent the possible hazards presented by abandoned gas wells.

As an example, Epp cited last year’s gas explosion in Wheatley that destroyed two buildings and injured 20 people.

“The Essex-Kent region deserves to know what they are up against when it comes to abandoned and orphaned wells,” said Epp in a news release.

Epp said he plans to further address the issue directly with the Liberal government when the House reconvenes in September.

“I am continuing to press for the federal government to engage the province to help address the financial, technical, and legal considerations hanging over the heads of thousands of our neighbours and friends,” he said. “This ongoing crisis that is only going to get worse until we act collectively.”

During a community town hall meeting in Leamington on Thursday, Epp encouraged those concerned about the wells to support an online petition. The petition on Change.org calls on both levels of government to provide funding for more effective remediation options, launch an awareness campaign, and assemble an emergency response team among other measures.
