Fire officials are lauding the actions of Wheatley residents after firefighters were called to investigate an odour of gas, not far from the site of last year’s explosion.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services said fire crews responded to the area of 108 Talbot Road East on Wednesday at around 1:25 p.m. after residents reported the smell of gas.

Firefighters used gas detection devices to monitor the air, however, no gas was detected.

“None of the gas detectors went off and there is nothing to indicate that wells are leaking or to raise concerns,” said Assistant Fire Chief Ken Labonte in a news release.

Despite the false alarm, Labonte said local residents did everything right in this situation

“They did the right thing. Smelled gas, evacuated and called 911,” he said.

CK fire officials said crews will continue to monitor the area.

In the meantime, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent said contractors are conducting the final work at the well closest to the gas explosion that occurred on August 26, 2021. Cutting and capping of the well took place on Wednesday.

Gas testing will continue with clean-up and restoration of the work area expected to take place later this week.
