Firefighters in Chatham-Kent will be taking to the streets and knocking on doors to educate the public on the importance of working smoke detectors.

Firefighters from all 19 stations across the municipality, along with community partners, will be visiting homes on Thursday to talk with residents about fire safety as part of CHiRP Day in Chatham-Kent. Fire officials will also check, test, and replacing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.

“This is the first time we have had a department-wide event like this, and I am extremely proud of the commitment from all our firefighters,” said Fire Chief Chris Case in a news release. “We know that working alarms prevent fire fatalities – so this is what we do – we visit homes in our communities, we chat about fire safety, and we install alarms. Simple and extremely effective.”

Firefighters have also been promoting the event by visiting schools across the municipality this month as Fire Prevention Week to talk to students about fire safety.
