Firefighters received more than 100 calls for service in Chatham-Kent as an ice storm blanketed the region last week.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said fire crews from stations throughout the municipality responded to downed wires, transformer fires, and fallen trees on Wednesday, with the highest call volume occurring when the storm peaked in the evening.
Firefighters also responded to two house fires, which were made more challenging by the weather. Fortunately, both were extinguished quickly and no one was injured.
“Firefighters, dispatchers, officers, and chiefs along with partners have shown tremendous efforts in protecting their community,” said Fire Chief Chris Case in a news release.
As well, fire dispatches handled nearly 1,500 emergency and nonemergency calls throughout the day.
High winds and ice accumulations also kept hydro crews busy for several days, with the final affected Hydro One customers finally seeing their lights and heat restored on Sunday.
