Paddlers compete during the Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race in 2017.

A local canoe and kayak race that supports conservation education has been cancelled due to impending heavy rainfall in the forecast.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority and St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation have announced that the 2023 Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race will not move forward on Sunday as planned.

Conservation officials said the decision was made on Wednesday after reviewing the forecast leading up to the event.

“Due to the amount and length of rainfall expected over the next three days, site conditions at both the start and finish lines are not expected to be useable on Sunday for the race,” said Donna Blue, the manager of communications with the conservation authority. “We felt it was best to make the call now to cancel the race in order to notify participants and those who planned to attend.”

The annual race on the Sydenham River is recognized by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association and serves as a fundraiser to support conservation education programs delivered by the conservation authority.

Those who have pre-registered for the race will receive a full refund.
