Sunday marks the start of October, and with it comes a hike in Ontario’s minimum wage.
As of October 1st, the minimum wage will rise from $15.50 an hour to $16.55.
Provincial officials say the 6.8 per cent raise means up to $2,200 more in workers’ pockets every year, bringing Ontario to one of the highest minimum wages in the country.
David Piccini, the new provincial Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development says the government is focused on providing workers a hand up to better jobs and bigger pay cheques.
“Our government is continuing to deliver steady and predictable annual increases, helping families offset the rising cost of living while also providing certainty to businesses by announcing this increase six months in advance,” Piccini said in a news release.
