Provincial Police say increased enforcement lead to more charges being laid as part of the OPP’s annual Festive Ride Campaign.
Officers from the West Region’s 13 detachments were out in force from November 16th to January 1st, keeping an eye out for drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Across the region, 2446 RIDE checkpoints were set up, compared to 1804 in 2022, stopping 13,197 vehicles. 353 impaired driving charges were laid, up from 278 last year, along with 55 warn-range suspensions.
Officers from Elgin County, who also cover Chatham-Kent, conducted 185 RIDE checkpoints, laying 28 impaired driving charges, up from 11 in 2022. 246 RIDE checks were conducted in Lambton County with 44 impaired driving charges laid.
“Drivers can expect to see RIDE checkpoints in their area at any time,” said Inspector Mike McConnell/OPP West Region Traffic and Marine Manager in a news release. “Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death, injury and property damage on Ontario roadways and it’s entirely preventable. If you plan to drink or take drugs, use a designated driver, a taxi or a rideshare service to get home safely.”
