Should CK Collect Organic Waste?

Chatham-Kent could be getting a green bin program to collect food and organic waste curbside.

Looking to divert sending garbage to landfills, the plan is to have the green bin program for single-family dwellings in Chatham-Kent urban settlement areas with a target of reducing food and organic waste by 50 percent. In general, household food and organic waste is estimated to constitute 30 percent of municipal solid waste.

Many communities across the province have installed green bin programs, including the city of London, which began last month. Green bin waste, to be collected weekly in London, is expected to divert up to 20,000 tonnes of waste annually from the landfill.

As Chatham-Kent works towards a green bin program in the next couple of years, the project timeline will include a community waste composition study, a review of best practices, public engagement, program design, and then procurement.

The plan is to have a green bin program in place in Chatham-Kent by 2026 or 2027.
