Municipal officials are encouraging the public to provide feedback on the development of an organic waste disposal program in Chatham-Kent.
The municipality has launched an online forum on the Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent website to garner input from residents on the Organic Waste Diversion Program. The municipality said the program will aim to divert food and organic waste from landfills and reduce residential food and organic waste by 50 per cent.
Organic waste makes up around 30 per cent of residential garbage, according to CK.
“This program is pivotal in augmenting the community’s waste diversion efforts. We value the community’s input and believe it’s essential in shaping the direction of Chatham-Kent’s future organic diversion initiatives,” said Huda Oda, CK’s manager of waste management, in a new release.
Chatham-Kent’s Waste Management Team is currently conducting a comprehensive feasibility study to examine the development of a curbside green bin program for organic waste. The study will also look at planning a home composter program and the viability of an organic waste depot collection program.
In the coming months, local residents will also be invited to take part in a public survey that will focus on specific elements of the program.
