Driver Found Slumped Behind the Wheel

Impaired driving charges have been laid in connection to a potentially dangerous situation in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Police received a complaint shortly after 8:40 Thursday evening about a vehicle stopped at the intersection of King Street West and Lacroix, and remained stopped through several cycles of the traffic lights.

Authorities say the driver was seen slumped over the steering wheel, then got out, leaving the vehicle in drive and allowing it to roll forward.

Officers arrived and suspected the man had been drinking.

The 39-year-old was arrested after refusing to cooperate with a roadside test and was taken to police headquarters.

The accused has been charged with impaired driving and refusing to comply with a demand. The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days.

The driver was released with conditions and a date in court next month.
