The local community is now a little greener thanks to a tree-planting program in Chatham.

The Sydenham Field Naturalists recently completed the Miyawaki Forest Planting Project, with dozens of volunteers planting 1,200 trees in just two days.

The first planting event was held on May 25 with the first half of the trees planted at Christian Park between Tissiman Avenue and Indian Creek Road East. The final 600 trees were planted on the plains of Mud Creek, just off Indian Creek the following day.

The Miyawaki method of planting, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native species in a dense, natural forest configuration.

“This technique accelerates forest growth and enhances biodiversity, providing numerous ecological benefits including carbon sequestration, improved air quality, and habitat creation for local wildlife,” the Field Naturalists said in a news release.

The tree planting program was made possible through the help of numerous volunteers and grant funding from the Chatham Kent Community Foundation.
