The Ontario government is marking Seniors Month this June by investing in Seniors Active Living Centres across the province, including several in Chatham-Kent.
The province will invest up to $15 million into all Seniors Active Living Centres (SALC) programs in Ontario, which connect seniors with resources and activities.
Locally, this will benefit Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre, the Active Lifestyle Centre in Chatham, the Thamesville Happy Club, the Ridgetown and Area Adult Activity Centre, the Morpeth Heritage 60+ Club, Tilbury Leisure Centre, Blenheim & Community Senior Citizens Group, and Wheatley and District Friendship Club.
The multi-million investment will result in the majority of SALC programs receiving a funding increase this year of between $25,000 and $50,000. The funds will be issued to deliver a variety of programs such as book clubs, fitness classes, health and wellness services, social groups, and other special events.
The provincial government funds 80 per cent of all SALC programming in Ontario, with individual organizations contributing the remaining 20 per cent.
According to the Ontario government, the number of seniors aged 65 and over is projected to increase significantly from 2.8 million to 4.4 million by 2046.
