With dangerously hot and humid conditions expected throughout the week, several cooling stations have been opened in Chatham-Kent to help people escape the heat.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said anyone in need of relief can attend the following locations:
- Chatham Hope Haven at 183 Wellington St. W. in Chatham every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- ROCK Missions at 233 Nelson St. in Wallaceburg, Monday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Any of the municipal offices in Blenheim, Chatham, Ridgetown, Tilbury, and Wallaceburg on Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- The Employment and Social Services office located on the first floor of the Health and Human Services Building at 435 Grand Ave. W in Chatham on Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Any branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library during regular business hours.
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for much of southern Ontario, with daytime highs expected to be near 35 C this week, with humidex values into the 40s. Little relief is expected overnight with lows in the low to mid 20s.
During this time, the municipality said residents are encouraged to call or visit friends and neighbours who may be at risk and to keep pets inside.
Those at the highest risk for heat-related illness include adults over the age of 65, infants and young children, outdoor workers, and those lacking shelter, water, or food.
