Chatham-Kent fire officials are urging local residents to use caution when celebrating during the Canada Day long weekend.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue is recommending that residents attend professional fireworks displays and leave the fireworks to the experts.
However, those who choose to have an informal fireworks display are asked to purchase fireworks from a trusted seller and to keep them out of the reach of children. Fireworks should also be stored in a cool, dry place and never left in a vehicle.
“If you do discharge fireworks, please make sure they are away from any combustible materials such as buildings, trees or dry grass and keep a hose or pail of water close by,” said Community Safety Officer Whitney Burk in a news release. “We also want to advise parents to keep sparklers away from children. Hot sparklers can burn and cause serious injury to your child. Celebrate with glow sticks and other glow-in-the-dark items.”
Consumer fireworks can be set off three days before, on and three days after July 1 until 11 p.m. As well, all fireworks must be set off on private property.
