School may be out for summer, but construction continues on the newest Catholic elementary school in Chatham-Kent.

Officials with the St Clair Catholic District School Board say the final touches are being put on the new St Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School on Tweedsmuir Avenue in Chatham.

Current work includes finishing interior details and completing landscaping and sidewalks around the building.

The eight-acre site features collaborative learning spaces, a two-storey learning commons, community room, and double-sized gym.

The new school will consolidate students from the now closed St Ursula and Georges P Vanier elementary schools. The 564-pupil place school will also include a daycare with 49 childcare spaces.

Staff are expected to be allowed into the building this week to begin preparing their classrooms and workspaces for the fall.

“This is an exciting milestone for our district, and we are eager to see the positive impact this new school will have on the Chatham community,” said Scott Johnson, Director of Education in a news release. “The success of this project underscores our dedication to creating a nurturing and inspiring educational environment.”

Officials say the project is progressing on schedule with the school set to be completed, cleaned, and ready to welcome students and staff in September.
