A Montreal man is facing several charges after allegedly evading police multiple times on Highway 401 in a stolen vehicle.

The Ontario Provincial Police said officers first attempted to stop a passenger vehicle without licence plates in the westbound lanes of the highway near Bloomfield Road in Chatham on July 1 at around 7:35 a.m. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and the officer did not pursue it in the interest of public safety.

Not long after at around 9:40 a.m., the vehicle was spotted by police again, this time in the eastbound lanes of the 401 near Bloomfield Road. The vehicle failed to stop another two times before officers finally pulled the vehicle over in Southwest Oxford

Authorities said the vehicle had previously been reported stolen from a car dealership in Hamilton.

As a result, a 49-year-old Montreal man is now charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, three counts of flight from police, mischief, driving without licence plates, and careless driving.

The accused was remanded into custody following a bail hearing.
