Wallaceburg’s downtown walking bridge is no longer expected to reopen before the end of July.

According to an update provided by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, rehabilitation work on the L.O. Stonehouse Memorial Walking Bridge is progressing well with construction this week focusing on the lift span, electrical work, and railing installations.

While initially expected to reopen in July, the contractor is now targeting completion for early to mid-August.

The municipality could not confirm if the bridge will be open in time for the town’s signature WAMBO event on August 9-10. However, municipal officials are working closely with event organizers to provide updates and a plan is in place if work on the bridge cannot be completed in time.

Chatham-Kent Council approved a $2.3 million tender for the rehabilitation project back in June 2023, with Hamilton-based Dayson Industrial Services hired to complete the work.

The downtown Wallaceburg bridge, originally built in 1910 and converted to a pedestrian crossing in 1983, has been shut down since November 2021 due to safety concerns.
