With as much as 70 mm of rain expected to fall over the next two days, local conservationists say we can expect area waterways to remain high into the middle of next week.
A rainfall warning is in effect for Chatham-Kent this morning, and officials with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority say there is the possibility of localized flooding.
Although the Thames has already peaked around Dutton and Thamesville following rain earlier in the week, today’s wet weather is expected to cause flooding along the river flats from Delaware to Chatham.
Officials say they’re prepared to operate the Indian-McGregor Creek Diversion Channel to protect Chatham’s south end if necessary, and the 6th Street Backwater Dam and Pumping Station in downtown Chatham to prevent the Thames River from flooding back up McGregor Creek.
High winds are also expected today, which could cause more damage along the Lake Erie shoreline.
