With a few months under his belt after taking over the position, Chatham-Kent’s new top doctor is looking forward to 2024.
With CK Public Health now able to focus on its other mandates following the COVID-19 pandemic, Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai said he feels important that the health unit does its part to prepare young people for adulthood and give them the best opportunities to maintain a healthy life.
“We would urge young people to get up to date on their vaccinations,” he said. “Vaccines save lives and getting vaccinated not only helps you but in some cases, it can help someone else; if you’re not sick you’re less likely to make someone else sick.”
Dr. Nesathurai said it’s also important in 2024 that the health unit continues to push for physical environments that are conducive to health.
“That we have bike paths. We encourage physical activity and that we give people time off to engage in recreational pursuits,” he said.
Dr. Nesathurai was hired as medical officer back in September and will serve in an “acting” role until his appointment is given approval from the Minister of Health.
