The Ministry of Environment is keeping close tabs on some local waterways after tests confirmed a blue-green algae bloom has made its way into the Thames River.

Officials say at this point, drinking water and public beaches have not been affected, but further testing is being carried out.

The public is asked to avoid drinking from or swimming in untreated surface water, and keeping children, pets, and livestock away from the rivers.

As well, be careful eating any fish caught where algae blooms may be present.

Potential health effects could be itchy, irritated eyes and itchy skin that result from direct contact such as swimming. If water is swallowed, symptoms such as headaches, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting are possible.
