A Belle River man is facing impaired driving charges following a traffic stop just outside of Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were contacted by a Richmond Street business at around 9 p.m. on Sunday regarding a potentially impaired driver who had just left the establishment.

Police located a suspect vehicle on Queens Line at Merlin Road and stopped the driver. Believing the driver was impaired, officers took him into custody for further testing.

The driver was taken to police headquarters, where he allegedly refused to provide a breath sample.

A 33-year-old Belle River man is now charged with impaired driving and refusing to comply with a demand. He was later released with conditions and an October court date.
