Alleged Pot-Smoking Elderly Woman Flees From Police

An elderly Blenheim woman is facing impaired driving charges after allegedly attempting to evade police on Canada Day.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were contacted at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday about a suspected impaired driver on Scane Road in Howard Township. A responding officer located the vehicle on O’Neil Line, however, the driver failed to stop and drove into a nearby cemetery.

Other officers arrived at the scene, where they deployed tire deflation devices called stop sticks and surrounded the vehicle. The driver refused to exit the vehicle, unlock the doors, or roll down the windows while smoking marijuana as officers watched.

Police then broke the window, turned off the vehicle and arrested the driver, who was also believed to have been impaired.

A 71-year-old Blenheim woman is now charged with impaired driving, having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, and flight from police. She was later released with conditions and a future court date.
