Alleged Shoplifter Arrested After Brief Chase

Allegedly shoplifting from a Chatham business and fleeing from police has resulted in charges for a local man.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded to a shoplifting incident at a Grand Avenue West retail store at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Authorities said a man had concealed over $350 worth of merchandise and attempted to leave the store without paying. When confronted by staff, the man dropped some of the items and ran off.

At around 1:30 p.m. the same day, officers located a suspect who allegedly attempted to flee from police. However, he was arrested following a brief foot chase. During a search of the suspect, officers also allegedly found a rolled-up piece of tinfoil containing suspected fentanyl.

As a result, a 36-year-old Chatham-Kent man has been charged with theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, resisting a peace officer, escaping lawful custody, and possession of a controlled substance.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
