Point Pelee National Park will be temporarily shutting its gates to visitors later this month.
Parks Canada and Caldwell First Nation will be conducting a deer cull between November 12 and 23, reopening to the public November 24.
A high population of white-tailed deer is considered a serious threat to forest and savannah health, and the annual reduction will help ensure the long-term health of the park’s sensitive ecosystem.
Parks Canada has been collaborating with Caldwell First Nation since 2015 to actively manage the deer population as part an overall program which includes ecosystem monitoring, deer population monitoring, and ongoing research.
Officials say the deer cull also provides opportunities for Caldwell First Nation members to participate in land-based learning, share knowledge, and engage in cultural food practices.
