Applications have opened for Chatham-Kent residents who would like to raise their own chickens.

On November 4, Chatham-Kent Council approved the implementation of a two-year pilot program to allow backyard chickens in certain areas of the municipality, including properties zoned Village Residential and Rural Residential, with the exception of the community of Erieau.

The municipality is now accepting applications for Hen Permits with an initial fee of $400 and renewal fees of $125.

Each approved property can have up to 10 hens, however roosters are not allowed.

Both hens and roosters are already allowed on agricultural zoned properties without a permit.
