Arrest Made After Windows Smashed In Downtown Chatham

Charges have been laid after several windows were smashed in Chatham’s downtown core.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded to multiple damage complaints on Thursday between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Authorities said the rear window of a parked vehicle was smashed on King Street East, the glass of a bus shelter was shattered on Wellington Street, the door window of a Wellington Street West property was damaged, and the front window of a Queen Street business was struck. As well, the front window of a King Street West business was smashed, triggering an alarm.

Using surveillance footage and CCTV cameras in the area, officers identified a suspect who was arrested on Wellington Street just after 1:30 p.m.

The 40-year-old Chatham-Kent man is now charged with five counts of mischief. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for several other charges, including theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, fraud under $5,000, identity theft and three counts of unauthorized use of a credit card.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
