It seems children born in our region have a higher risk of developing asthma than kids born in other areas.
Researchers at the University of Western Ontario’s Lawson Health Research Institute have spent years looking into the issue and determined Chemical Valley and the air pollutants associated with the petro-chemical industry do make a difference.
They followed 115,000 children for 10 years between 1993 and 2009.
Their findings showed kids born in Sarnia have nearly a 1 in 4 chance of developing asthma.
In Windsor it’s 21%, and 17% for children living in London.
Asthma is the most common chronic illness in kids and can have a major impact on their quality of life.
